Episode #15

Hello, my name is Daniel Abraham Gebru, reigning Paralympic cycling champion for the Netherlands, but my roots are in Eritrea. Currently, I am mentoring young refugees in the Netherlands and trying to inspire them by showing them how sports can help them integrate in the Netherlands. In addition, I am working hard towards my goal of successfully defending my Olympic title later this year. I am happy to share my experiences, highs and lows with you on the road to Tokyo 2021!

I can’t wait… Now also for me, Tokyo 2021 is coming closer and closer! As you maybe remember, I was preparing in hot conditions during a training camp in the Sierra Nevada. Well, scenery has changed. Now, you will be able to find me in Portugal where we planned two weeks of specific training on the track. Doing my laps on this cosy velodrome gets me really in the mood for what’s to come. The recent amazing performances of Team NL give me even more motivation to go all-in as well!

Last days we have been focusing on time trial efforts and the feeling was very good. I was also happy with the data that followed after these sessions, it shows that my preparation is going well. Since my first goals in Tokyo will be the 4km pursuit on the track, I also tested two times on race pace. This went well, especially the second attempt gave my a very good feeling.

The plan for the coming days is clear. I will, for example, do a very easy endurance ride, before we do yet another time trial test on the road. On Sunday I will go for an easy spin, nothing too much, before my flight to Tokyo departs next Monday. I am so excited!
