FUTURUM | Merino is the future of sustainability

Human and planet friendly

Merino wool has it all!

As a sustainable brand, we set ourselves the goal of using as many materials and fabrics as possible in clothing that are not or less harmful to the environment. They must also be produced in an animal and people-friendly manner. Merino wool is a good example of this. It is used in quality products such as socks, baselayers, wind stoppers and jerseys.

Merino is a durable natural product that also increases your performance. "In all new developments, we are currently trying to make the product out of merino wool. This is not yet possible for all applications, because the fabric and clothing manufacturers are not yet ready. But it's going fast. Increasingly, our manufacturers are succeeding in making thin, light and also hard-wearing clothing from it. We can say that our manufacturers are at the forefront of this," says Roland ten Brinke, managing director at FUTURUM.

"We consciously focus on merino, because it is a fantastic sustainable and functional product. There is no substance that regulates body temperature and drains excess body moisture better. It breathes perfectly, it doesn't itch and you don't have any unpleasant smells after the effort. Merino wool cleans itself. This is due to the released lanolin, a layer of fat from the sheep. You just hang the merino clothes outside for a while without washing them and then they are fresh again".

"WE ARE A SUSTAINABLE BRAND AND PROCESS AS MUCH MERINO WOOL AS POSSIBLE."

- Roland ten Brinke, managing director FUTURUM

If merino wool ends up in nature or in waste, it breaks down 100 percent. "That's why we always aim for the highest possible percentage of merino wool. What we see is that cycling clothing manufacturers say that their baselayer, for example, is made of merino. But in reality there's only 15 percent in it. Our lightweight, seamless PROFORMANCE baselayers consist of 95 percent merino wool. That's unique for a seamless base layer."

Merino comes from merino sheep. They thrive best under the climatic conditions in New Zealand, Australia and sometimes South America. We use merino wool from European fabric manufacturers who source their wool in Australia, New Zealand and South America. We ensure sustainability throughout the supply chain. "We know where it comes from, that animal welfare has been respected, that suppliers have followed environmental rules and that energy and water have not been unnecessarily wasted in production.’’, concludes Roland.
